Aloha! This piece, Makena, is about a place in the world that is possibly my very favorite place in the world. Makena is on the south side of Maui, that includes the destination beaches called Big Beach and Little Beach. Little Beach is known for it's embrace of counter-culture archetypes including nudists, swingers, hippies, wild college kids, and LGBTQIA+ people. I spent a lot of time here and it's a truly open and fun place. Getting there, too, is a beautiful and windy drive through paradise. The subject of this painting is my dear friend Emily, who radiates Aloha in everything she does, and exemplifies all the qualities of this tropical utopia.
